‘No trials on GM crops':The State Government will not permit private companies to undertake trials and research on genetically modified (GM) crops.

Addressing presspersons after a meting with bankers and officials of the Agriculture Department here on Wednesday, Minister for Agriculture Umesh V. He asserted that the department had not given permission to any multinational or local company to undertake trials.

It was alleged that Monsanto had conducted trials on Bt maize in Bijapur. Mr. Katti said no private firm had approached the Government seeking permission to conduct trials on GM crops. After reading media reports on trials on GM crops, he had directed officials to act on the matter.
Meanwhile, a meeting convened here by the Agriculture Department to discuss issuing no-objection certificates (NOC) to undertake trials and research on bio-safety evaluation on genetically modified (GM) crops on Wednesday has been postponed. The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha has been opposing testing of GM crops.
